When removing amalgam fillings at our practice we have a strict protocol using different precautions.
- Latex Free Rubber Dam - This one of the most important precautions we use. The dam acts as a barrier to isolate the teeth and ensure no mercury vapour is inhaled, no particles of amalgam can be swallowed or stick to the patient’s soft tissues.
- Oxygen is used during the process. A nose piece is placed over the patient’s nose so oxygen is inhaled and not mercury vapour
- High Speed Suction - The amalgam filling is sectioned and removed in large chunks. High speed suction is used to avoid mercury recirculation.
- Surgery Air Filter - This is a charcoal air filter used in the surgery to filter mercury vapour from the room
